Tuesday -- games, sustainability, and an appreciation activity

Hi guys!

It’s Sophia and Alexa, and today we did a mix of activities ranging from sports (soccer and volleyball) to learning about how the Tunza Africa NGO works. The volleyball game was an intense match, the Menlo students vs. Banjika students. And the soccer game was also Menlo students vs. Banjika students, a close match. There was a large crowd of Banjika students cheering for the different teams. At the same time, the soccer game ended with a tight score of 3-4, with Menlo losing. Later on, the Tunza Africa NGO gave us a presentation on what they do to support Karatu’s environment and schools in Karatu. This organization provides guidance to schools, helping them become more sustainable by starting food forests, planting trees, and building water tanks. After this presentation, we prepared lemongrass essential oil by using a distillation technique. Then, we visited the Banjika food forest that Tunza Africa helped install and learned about versatile Moringa trees. We also learned how to manually grind the leaves and create a powder used for all sorts of healing. We ended our day with a fun leadership activity where we wrote kind words on each other’s backs. Today was a light day, being our first night back at the homestays.

See you later!
Best,
Sophia and Alexa
